Soft Tissue Transplantation:Types of Graft and Healing Process

Abstract
Soft tissue transplantation is commonly using for recovering function to the patient with ligamentinjury. Knee is most popular site, ligament injury, meniscus tear and damage of extensormechanism is frequently indicated cases, and recently, operations for ligaments of ankle, shoulderand elbow are increasing. Materials for using soft tissue transplantation are divided into autograftand allograft. To get the successful soft tissue transplantation, patient selection, combinedinjury and its degree, mechanical characteristics of the graft, graft position and tension, fixationmethod, biological reaction and remodeling of the graft tissue and postoperative rehabilitationshould be considered, and when the allograft is used, sterilization or storage process may alter theproperties of the graft and may affect final clinical results. This article is aimed to review thetypes of graft material commonly used in soft tissue transplantation, basic knowledge of grafthealing, and clinical results of soft tissue transplantation.
